General Summary:  The College Writing Director will lead and support CCAC faculty in developing and teaching English Composition, Technical Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and other Communication Arts courses, leading to improved student engagement, achievement, and overall retention across the college. The Writing Director will also build relationships across departments and disciplines related to improved, efficient writing. Additionally, the College Writing Director will assist Student Affairs and academic deans in coordinating with Learning Commons tutors & Reading Lab techs, holding regular meetings and workshops, and acting as liaison between the Learning Commons and tutors, faculty, staff, and deans. This position is critical to support student success in composition, which impacts retention and completion across the college.

Job Duties:  1. Faculty development and engagement

Conduct workshops at start of fall and spring semesters for faculty teaching ENG-090

Coordinate and lead “norming sessions” at least once a year in which ENG-090, ENG-101 and ENG-102 faculty discuss student work, teaching practices, and assessment across composition classes

Update Blackboard modules as needed each semester

Assist and participate with Department Heads and Humanities Deans in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of new adjunct faculty for ENG 090 and ENG 101/101L courses across campuses (and other staffing needs that may arise from continued growth).

Conduct individual and small group consultation on writing instruction in ENG and across disciplines

2. Student success and retention

Provide college-wide direction of the Learning Commons

Act as liaison with college leadership, Student Affairs, EAL, Honors, Student Success Coaches, Student Resource Navigators, Librarians, Advisors, and CIHS/Dual Enrollment related to teaching and learning of composition and the placement process.

3. Placement testing

Consult with the placement test director, advisors, students, and instructors on placement decisions via Directed Self-Placement

Coordinate with CRE Department Heads, faculty, advisors, and CIHS/DE stakeholders around Reading placement testing appeals.

Consult with Advising, Registration, CIHS/DE and ITS on directed self-placement process.

4. Curriculum development and assessment

Facilitate faculty work on curricular revisions. Most immediately, planned revisions for ENG-090 (Fundamentals of College Writing) and ENG 101/101L (English Composition + Embedded Tutoring & Writing Lab)

Assess success of directed self-placement and ENG-101L model

Arrange for data collection and/or data presentation from Institutional Research and/or Achieving the Dream

5. Programming

Coordinate with Student Life to bring in speakers, workshops, lecturers, and other public events geared toward freshman students such as “Socially Conscious Art,” local poet and writer presentations, Learning Commons workshops & research breakfasts, and the annual Celebration of Student Writing & Learning


Clearance:  Current criminal record/child abuse clearances will be required if offered the position and in order to be employed at the College. The three clearances are Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Records Check, and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Background Check.
